How Master's Degree Classification Works

Many UK master's courses use credit-weighted averages, often with classification bands such as Distinction, Merit and Pass.

Boundaries and dissertation rules vary by university, so use this calculator as a rough guide only.

Most UK master's programmes are 180 credits, split roughly into 120 credits of taught modules and a 60-credit dissertation (some courses use a 40/20 or 150/30 split instead). Because the dissertation carries a large single credit weight, it usually has more influence on your final average than any single taught module.

Postgraduate Classification Bands

Most UK master's courses that award Distinction, Merit and Pass use bands close to: Distinction 70% and above, Merit 60-69%, Pass 50-59%. Some universities also require the dissertation itself to reach the band threshold (not just the overall average) before awarding a Distinction.

Because the dissertation is often 30-60 credits out of 180, a mark just below the Distinction threshold there can be difficult to offset with taught modules alone. Check your programme handbook for any dissertation-specific Distinction rule.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a master's Distinction always 70%?

Many courses use 70% as a Distinction guide, but official rules vary by university and programme.

How much does the dissertation weigh in a master's degree?

It's commonly 30-60 credits out of a 180-credit master's, often a third or more of the total. Because of this size, the dissertation mark usually moves the final average more than any single taught module.

Can a strong dissertation offset a weaker taught average?

Sometimes, if the university calculates classification purely as a single credit-weighted average. Many programmes also add a separate rule requiring the dissertation itself to meet the Distinction threshold, so check your handbook before assuming one component can fully compensate for another.

Do all UK universities use Distinction, Merit and Pass for master's degrees?

Most taught master's programmes do, but the exact boundaries and any additional dissertation conditions differ by institution, so this calculator should be used for planning rather than as an official prediction.

Does failing one module block a Distinction?

At many universities a failed module needs to be passed (sometimes through resit or reassessment) before classification is confirmed, even if your overall weighted average is above the Distinction threshold. Check your assessment regulations for compensation or condonement rules.

What average should I aim for to be safely inside Distinction range?

Because boundaries are usually applied to the rounded final average, many students treat anything from about 72-73% upward as a reasonably safe margin above the typical 70% Distinction line, though this varies by institution.
